The day I thought I was quids in

November 8th, 2011

Current rating: 5/5

For one whole day I thought I was £5k richer!

I went to the cashpoint the other day and checked my balance. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes as I had £5,000 more than I anticipated. Whoopeedoo!!!!

Then reality set in – who put it there? Had my boss been kind and generous and given me a secret bonus? Had I been overpaid?

I decided to mull it over and concluded that as everyone else in the office seemed to be getting a tax refund, then so had I.

Oh, I had a few plans for that money I can tell you - Christmas skiing holiday here we come....

Today I decided to pop to the bank to get to the bottom of this mysterious payment. I was waiting for them to say that HMRC had paid it in, but no. It turns out that the balance includes my overdraft limit and was therefore overstated by £5,000!

I felt robbed...how dare they?

They explained that they had switched systems and were encountering a few teething problems. Rest assured they would arrange to show the correct balance in due course.

What a disappointment. Thankfully I didn't go on an immediate spending spree. I wonder if any of their other customers did?!

If you’re interested it’s Lloyds TSB that’s migrating its banking systems from its 2008 acquisition of HBOS. A quick Google search shows that this is ‘progressing well’ and that the group is creating a "world class IT operation". I beg to differ.
