We asked Alex:

If you won the lottery what would be the first three things you would do with the money?

First, I’d pay off my overdraft, student loan and any other debt. Second, I’d gather my family and close friends together and do the same for them. Third, I’d begin to consider my property and investment options.

Are you an optimist or pessimist when it comes to your finances?

I’m sure it’s the same for most people (or maybe not), but when I’m in the black I’m happy and when I’m in the red I’m a wreck. Having suffered with debt problems after university I know how difficult it can be to remain optimistic!

What has been your biggest saving when renewing an insurance policy?

Much of my general insurance is covered by some of the bolt-on services offered to me by my bank (Smile/Co-operative) as I don’t really own that many material belongings of any significant value that require an insurance policy.

Best money saving tip?

I live in London and my best money saving tip is to spend time sofa surfing. I spent six months last year living with friends and family for periods of up to two weeks and saved half a year’s rent. This required a lot of moving around and time doing chores around the house as a trade off, but I saved a packet!

Who do you think are the heroes and villains in the financial market?

Martin ‘Money Saving Expert’ Lewis for his campaigning against unfair bank overdraft charges, despite the Office of Fair Trade ruling, and Charles Ferguson for his Oscar-winning documentary Inside Job are my heroes. The investment banking industry and the Financial Services Authority are villains for obvious reasons!
