Kate Gregory, PA, Landmark

July 5th, 2011

Current rating: 5/5

Kate Gregory is PA to Stephen Stout, CEO of Landmark Information Group. She lives in Exeter and has worked for Landmark for 7 years. She loves going to the theatre, photography and shoes.

We asked Kate:

Do you give enough time to managing your finances? I try to, but often think I should do more. I’m not too bad with my bank accounts and ISAs in that I tend to know when the interest rate falls off and needs updating. But I often think I should audit my utility bills and see if I can reduce these.

Best investment/worst investment?  I’m not a big investor in shares. My parents bought me British Gas shares when it was privatised back in the 80’s and I only sold these about 5 years ago. Since then, I bought shares in my last company and fortunately managed to sell just as the shares peaked meaning I raised about £750 in 3 months. The shares plummeted 3 days after I sold!

Where do you think you inherited your attitude to financial risk from?  I think I’m probably fairly risk averse when it comes to investments in that I don’t like to lose the hard earned money I have saved carefully. However, I do understand that for pensions etc you need to be positioned to take full advantage of market movements.

What’s the worst piece of financial advice you have been given?  I’m incredibly sceptical and firmly believe “if it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not”. So any advice I do take really does have to prove itself before I’ll act on it. I may even have missed out as a result.

What one thing baffles you about the UK financial system?  Although I often look at the markets to see what they are doing and I’m very interested in the subject, analysing them to understand what is a good investment at a particular time and again when to sell is completely baffling.
