It's amazing the things we take for granted.
Last week I needed to get some money out so I went to the nearest cash machine which happened to be in a supermarket down the road from where I work. Just as I was finishing my transaction the shop had a power cut and the cash machine swallowed my card.
Trying to keep a check of the panic I was starting to feel I found the manager only to be told there was nothing they could do, I would need to contact the bank that owns the cash machine to get my card back.
No card..... no easy access to my money, I was really starting to panic. How long would it take to get my card back! I contacted the bank that owned the cash machine and they told me I needed to contact my own bank to cancel the card. Now panic was being replaced by anger - it wasn't my fault I had lost my card. I phoned my bank and after explaining what happened, they told me that a new card had been ordered and would be with me within 4 working days. Okay, so I still had to wait four days but the relief that it was sorted was immense.
I have never really appreciated that it is a simple piece of plastic that gives you access to your hard earned money and when that bit of a plastic is taken away from you, you are left feeling helpless as well as cashless!!
