Council tax

Set by local councils, council tax raises funds to help pay for local services like policing and refuse collection. This type of tax applies to all domestic properties, such as houses, bungalows, flats, maisonettes, mobile homes or houseboats, and you must pay the tax whether you own or rent the accommodation.

A council tax bill will be sent directly to your home, and in most cases the owner, occupier, or tenant living in the property will pay the bill. The amount of council tax you'll have to pay is different for each property because it's worked out depending on the size and type of the property, the number of people living at the property, and how much the occupiers earn.
